How I Announced My Fight to co-Workers

Pic of me at work

This is the email I sent out to my co-workers to announce my fight:

Hello Everyone,

With some reserve, I write to you all to say that I will be out for a couple weeks and would just like to have you hear it from the source.  A great quote once says “Bravery is the Courage to step forward, even when you are afraid”…so with that and some hesitation and fear, I openly declare myself in my fight against prostate cancer. In the next few days, I will undergo surgery with the hope of defeating this nemesis in my life that I was recently diagnosed with.

I stand unafraid and face the tough road ahead of me, I will wage my fearsome fight against cancer with one shield and one sword carrying my determination and my fury and zeal for life itself, emboldened by all the love and support that’s kept me going this long already.

It is my absolute desire to be a leader in awareness and to set the example for men everywhere who find themselves in my very same shoes, that prostate cancer can be beaten and you can get your life back.  So, much like Susan G Komen for women, if I have to be the voice and/or the face of men’s cancer…so be it.

There is a big sign out front of the Univ of Colorado Anschutz Cancer Pavilion that says “I don’t want your sympathy, I want your strength.” And I will add to that my own words, “I don’t want your pity, I want your Positivity”!

I’m open so feel free to come by and chat me up.
